The Eagle of Freedom

In the descriptive poem, The Eagle of Freedom, Alfred B. Street uses his poetic skill to describe his thoughts about an eagle’s freedom and its defiance and triumph over the elements, which explains why this poem goes under the “eagle theme”. ... The words, ‘Eagle of Freedom’ in line one, builds a picture in the reader’s mind of freedom. The eagle is a symbol of freedom and freedom is personified in the eagles struggle against the elements in the first stanza and his surveillance of the cycle of time in the second stanza. The struggle for freedom is found in the characteristics of the eagle. The eagle’s struggle and perseverance is illustrated in the line, “how proud to the tempest those pinions were flung” The contrast between freedom and death is emphasized by the play on the contrasting images of freedom, and the threat to its confinement, death. ... The use of climax in his 2nd stanza, explains to the reader that even through the continuous change of landscape and humanity, the eagle has still survived. He uses words such as “triumphs”, ” joy”, “victory” and “bless” to reveal that not only has the eagle survived it, but he has also triumphed over it. The rhyme scheme AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF, GG, HH reflects the progression of the fight for freedom and is reflected in line 4 of stanza 2”, he mocks at Time’s changes, he triumphs o’er all;”
