To find out how the studies, Stanley Milgrams studies of obedience and Philip Zimbardos prison simulation, fit into the early approaches of modern psychology one must find out what the origins of early approaches of modern psychology are. I submit that approaches and perspectives are different words for the same thing. According to page 32 of our book, there are ten major perspectives in psychology; structuralism, functionalism, Gestalt psychology, behavioral, psychodynamic, humanistic, physiological, evolutionary, cognitive, and cultural and diversity. Structuralism is the earliest approach in modern psychology, which attempted to identify the basic elements and structure of conscious experience. Functionalism is an approach to psychology focused on the purposes of consciousness. Gestalt psychology is an approach that emphasizes our perception of a whole is different from our perception of the individual stimuli. ... Having explained all the different approaches, and having read about the studies, in my opinion, I would say that both of the studies used the behavioral perspective approach in the experiments because they both observed the behavior of the test subjects, and how the subjects learned to behave in the given situations.
