The earned income tax credit is something we all see at least once a year while preparing our taxes. Personally, I never paid much attention to the credit other than knowing that I do not qualify for it. However, I have learned through our text that the earned income tax credit is “a tax credit for low-income working families, with or without children” and its purpose “… is to offset social security taxes paid by low-wage earners and thus keep the Federal government from taxing families into poverty.” The earned income tax credit was enacted to lighten the burden on low-income families by providing a tax credit that can be claimed by the taxpayer as a refund, even if the taxpayer owes no federal personal income tax.
