Throughout life people have decisions to make and expectations to live up to. The image people have of us is often different from the image we have of ourselves. Time and again we are torn by the expectations other people have of us. Grant is facing this same dilemma in his life. Grant feels pressured by the white world to “know his place” and by the black community to be their savior. Grants education and knowledge is threatening to the white community, and Grant is very aware of their expectations of him. He is not treated as an educated man, rather an ignorant boy. Grant is a college educated man and at that time, many of the whites didn’t even make it to the college level. He escaped the system of hard cheap labor in the white world. Although he is smarter than most of the white men, at times they condescendingly refer to him as “Boy”.
