HOUSTON -- Gerry Hunsicker is still the general manager of the Houston Astros. Whether that status changes in the near future remains to be seen. Hunsicker met with New York Mets officials in Florida last Thursday evening to interview for their vacant GM position. Hunsicker has maintained the same stance throughout the process, opting neither to confirm nor deny that an interview took place. "I continue to decline to comment on the entire situation," Hunsicker said Monday morning from his office at Minute Maid Park. A report in Monday's edition of The New York Daily News stated that Hunsicker "intends to withdraw his name from consideration for the Mets' vacant GM position." Jim Duquette, currently the Mets interim general manager after taking over when Steve Phillips was fired in June, appears to be the leading candidate should Hunsicker indeed decline further consideration.
