INTRODUCTION Packaging exists because it performs four basic functions i.e., protection, Containment, Information and Utility of use - which vary in importance depending on the nature of the products and their modes of distribution and use. Every retail and industrial package exists solely to prove one or more of these four functions. These four factors have gained importance over a period of time when man started producing goods in surplus necessitating the distribution of such goods globally and locally. Packaging has evolved gradually into diversified forms and end uses, with interesting legends behind each type of packaging. Though all present day packaging is mostly constructed from wood or wood derivatives, glass, metals such as steel and aluminum, and petrochemicals, metal packaging has been a significant input in the packaging industry.
