The story begins with Gene going back to Devon, where he went to school in his town in New England. He flashes back 15 years to remember his days with his very close friend Phineas. Being the mischeivious children they were they had attemptened to jump off of a large tree into a river. Phineas, or Finny, being the wild and crazy person that he was, went first; Gene followed. Gene is normally a conservative, conformist type person, but when he is around Finny, he tends to break the rules more often than not. Finny is a very popular kid at Devon. He is like by both his teachers and his fellow classmates. He is a very charming, likable rule-breaker. The substitute headmaster, Mr. Patch-Withers notices that Finny was using his school tie for a belt. This is a heavy offence and Mr. Patch-Withers confronts Finny about his tie. Finny makes up a nonsense excuse, at which Mr. Patch-Withers is taken by surprise, and does not punish Finny. Finny and start a special club between the two of them. They name it the "Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session." This is a club for doing exciting and dangerous things. While Gene is limb Diving for this club, he loses his balance and comes close to falling off. Finny manages to stop Gene from falling. This causes Gene to realize that he had saved his life. Afterwards, more people start to join the club that Finny and Gene made up. Finny makes up a game called "blitz ball," which turns out to be a hit that summer. Finny decides that they should go to the beach, which means big trouble if they are caught. Gene decides to go along with the plan. That night, Finny admits that he considers Gene his best friend, which touches Gene deeply; but somehow Gene can't say the same thing. Finny mocks Gene's scholarly ambition, and Gene begins to believe that Finny is trying to come out ahead. Finny is the best in the school in athletics; Gene knows that he can be the best in academics, if Finny wouldn't take up so much of his time. Gene finds it hard to compete with Finny, but continues to try. When Finny asks Gene to come see a friend jump from their tree the night before exams, Gene vehemently objects. Gene thinks this is Finny's way of trying to ruin his grades. Finny says he thought that Gene never needed to study. Gene, somewhat appeased, goes to the jumping tree with Finny. Gene and Finny decide to do jump off the tree together.
