Milwaukee area employers are facing an unprecedented third year of double digit increases in the cost of health care premiums in 2003. Previous increases have already boosted Milwaukee area health insurance costs to 55% higher than the Midwest average, this according to a 2002 study by the consulting firm, William M. ... The end result of these unchecked rises in health care costs will ultimately be a degradation in the standard of living for area residents.
The rising premium costs are directly due to the higher cost of health care in southeastern Wisconsin and price increases to improve profit margins by health maintenance organizations. Health care costs began to rapidly rise in the mid 1990’s after the failure of managed health care. Managed care companies slowed health care costs by monitoring and restricting patient treatments when certain procedures or medications were considered not medically necessary.
