With a computer in almost every household, the use of computers now extends far beyond practical purposes. The gaming side of computers accounts for nearly $6 billion in revenue alone and while most people use computer games as an occasional distraction, the reference to hardcore "gamers" and online gaming cults and communities can hardly be ignored. Youd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesnt at least know of one person whose life has been consumed by computer gaming. Addiction to computer gaming is indeed very real and commonplace. According to Maressa Hecht Orzack, the director of the Computer Addiction Studies Centre, symptoms of game addiction include "falling behind in school and work and basically deferring everything else in your life so you can play. ...
Computer gaming can develop into an addiction: "in some cases, this enjoyment goes so far as to become a serious kind of addiction, with some players spending as much as 35 hours out of 48 constantly playing computer games”.
