This Passage, “The San Francisco Earthquake,” is written in a sarcastic, but humorously panicked tone. The story makes the readers laugh while, simultaneously, causing the reader to wonder if all the people in the story survived, or didn’t. The author begins the passage with sarcastic, almost black humor. He describes his first experience with an earthquake as “enjoyed,” “great,” and “distinguished.” Then the author’s tone changes to a more sadistic type of humor. When the earthquake hits, the author says that as he stood there watching people panic, some in “queer apparel” others not wearing “anything at all.” It is a serious situation, but to imagine seeing people running around with next to nothing or nothing on is what the author wants his readers to see and, in the process, laugh, even though it is a serious situation.
