Damn right I would fight

Damn Right! I Would Fight! ... After studying all semester about the numerous aspects of war I have asked myself: What would I do if war broke out? If I joined the military, would I have the courage and determination to make it through boot camp? What if I disagreed with the war effort and was drafted? Would I become a draft dodger and flee the country the first chance I had? Would I be able to answer the call to serve my country with pride and excitement, or would I do everything I could to avoid joining the military? ... Would I simply separate myself from the cause or would I actively try to resist? And mostly, when it came down to it, would I be willing to die for my country and the cause it is fighting for? Although I could never truly understand the horrors of war, I have been educated on the principles and history of war. I know that many men have seen and experienced things in war that they would wish on noone. Despite this, I believe that if our country went to war over a cause that I supported and believed in, I would be ready and willing to risk my life and serve my country in any way necessary; not only to do my part, but to actually make a difference. ... I have often wondered what I would do if I went to war. Would I be scared and ineffective, or would I conform to the typical “killing machine” that is produced by the Marine Corps? If I was drafted would I be angry for being forced into the military, or would I be excited to have the opportunity to serve my country? ... The country was being “swept up in the patriotic tide of the Kennedy era” and in the middle of the fight with communism (Caputo 4). ... If I was living at that time, and at my age, I would be at the same point in my life as Philip Caputo in his book Rumor of War. ... “That is what I wanted, to find in a commonplace world a chance to live heroically. Having known nothing but security, comfort, and peace, I hungered for danger, challenges, and violence. ... However, by putting yourself in the same time and position of a young man like Caputo (whose beliefs and actions, I think, are perfect examples of how I would react to the same situation) you can see why joining the military did not seem to be a bad idea at all.
