I chose the 1975 film, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, for my film review. This movie is an adaptation from the novel written by Kesley. Kesley worked in a mental institution and some of the characters are based on real patients. The film won five Academy Wards; Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It tells the story of a con man, McMurphy, who is institutionalized as a way to escape working on a prison farm. What he does not realize is that once he is admitted to the institution he cannot be released until the medical staff feels he is safe for society. McMurphy strives to overcome the head nurse, Nurse Ratched, and finds he understands the mentalities of the other patients in the ward. When McMurphy first arrives at the institution, the other patients follow a structure in the institution where interactions with each others are limited. Many of the patients are withdrawn from others, and only follow the “daily routine” dictated by the head nurse, Nurse Ratched.
