The teachings of the Buddhist and Christian religions regarding ‘violence, war and peace’ aim to ultimately reach one goal, and this is associated with the promotion of peace. For Buddhists, it begins the inner peace of Nirvana, while for Christians it is the peace with the union of God. Both lead to the peace between ourselves and those with whom we share this world. Here it is evident that there are similarities and differences shared between the teachings of the two religions, in the strive for peace.
These diversities and similarities of ethical teachings are a direct result of the differences of the religions and their forms of belief, practice and worship. ... However, those from another variant of Buddhism known as Mahayana (Northern) Buddhism, see the Buddha not as a man who lived, but a god who is divine and can be prayed to. ...
In all Buddhism, the main emphasis is on achieving both inner and outer peace, and the rejection of violence. Associated with violence is suffering, and according to Buddhist teaching this always results from ‘tanha’ or desire. Buddhist also argue that only when individuals achieve inner peace can peace exist in a larger scope, such as between nations. ... The sacred writings of Buddhism is known as the Pali Canon and contains the Tripitaka, which holds stories of the Buddha and all the foundations to the ethical teachings of peace in Buddhism.

Violence comes from greed, envy and ignorance, and this is why Buddha sought to conquer wanting and violence through proclaiming the ‘Middle Way’, the Fourth of the Noble Truths.
The Four Noble Truths being four fundamental principles of nature (Dhamma) which came from the Buddha’s assessment of the human condition and is the basis of his teachings. ... It is these sort of guidelines which assist Buddhists in reaching the peace within them, and living an ethical lifestyle, acting morally with loving kindness and peace.
