Eagle Runner is a fairly distressed character. The author of Class, Sherman Alexie, made him Native American, very possibly being metaphoric with the emotionally nomadic state of mind; roaming around, being uncertain about much in his life. He thought he was headed down the perfect path when he encountered a few bends, where his situations just threw him off even more. Hidden symbolism is used throughout the story to embellish his characteristics and dynamic history. This roving led to him being confronted with a completely strange world, in the setting of an Indian bar, a world he no longer understands. Once Eagle arrives at the bar, he’s confronted of more confusion. Initially wanting so badly to be with “his people,” but in turn he finds that his history no longer means anything to him, or the world. His ethnic reputation saturates much of the story.
