A man is sitting in a trench, his own blood mixing with the sweat that is coming off his body. He takes one long deep breath. He brings his hand above the ditch and waves on the attack. He hears a million voices crying out as they jump out of their respective ditches for the charge. He jumps out himself and yells at the top of his voice. Is he trying to scare the opposing soldiers? Is he trying to encourage his own soldiers on, and be a good leader? No. He is trying to silence his own fear, that even now, as he charges into the blood of the war cries out “Stop!” Can war be justified?
