Brad Bankson Western Civ. Mr. Philbeck March 30, 2003 Absolutism #1 My book defines absolutism as a form of government where the sovereign power or ultimate authority rested in the hands of a monarch who claimed to rule by divine right and was therefore responsible only to god. So to put it easier terms, there is one leader who answers to no one, and the people do not get squat for input. Cardinal Richelieu, Louis XIII’s chief minister from 1624 to 1642, was a strong believer in the power of the crown. He got rid of the rights of the Huguenots, political and military rights, but left them with the same religious rights.
