Project: l’ Art Francais Henri Matisse: Harmony In Red Henri Emile Benoit Matisse born in Le Cateau Cambresis in France on December 31, 1869 painted Harmony In Red in 1908. Matisse was a painter, sculptor, and a printmaker. Born in 1869 and died in 1954 Henri was most known for his bright, bold, and very colorful works of art. Harmony In Red is in The Hermitage at St. Petersburg collection in Leningrad. This piece was oil on canvas work. Matisse was French and in this piece Henri uses fruit, flowers, and other bold objects. Fauvism was a movement in French art that brought new styles of using color in the artists work. Matisse was the leader of Fauve movement also known as the “wild beast” movement. Red being the background in this piece brought a vibrant feeling to the work in general. There is also a woman who is putting fruit in a basket type object.
