The Yellow Wallpaper vs. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
At different points in time, two stories were written for different reasons. “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte P. Gilman and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber are two stories which even though were written apart from each other, share similar themes and ideas. ... This “prevailing idea” that Schwiebert talks about is similar in “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”. ... In Thurber’s story, Mitty is controlled by his wife’s false concern for him and daydreams to escape it. ... Showing disregard for Mitty’s frustration, she says with a condescending tone that she needs to take his “’temperature when’” they get home (para. ...
In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the protagonist who goes unnamed, is oppressed to the point of insanity by her overbearing husband, John. ... Both “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” use imagery to help the story progress in their own unique way. For example, in “The Yellow Wallpaper” the description of the “…beautiful shaded lane…” which connects the house to the “…private little wharf…” and bay could be seen as the heroine’s path to curing her illness (para. ... The description of the path being shaded is the protagonist’s uncertainty about her path to a happy and fulfilling life. Another very important image in this story is the last scene where she walks over John because he has fainted from seeing her tear off wallpaper and crawl on the floor (para. ... This imagery could be seen as her gaining control of her life and actually putting herself in John’s previous domineering position. Even the yellow wallpaper itself is an image used to mirror the heroine’s state of mind and illness.
