Radar: How it Started and How it Works
The word radar is an acronym for Radio Detection And Ranging. Radar is a method of detecting distant objects and determining their position, velocity, or other characteristics by analysis of very high frequency radio waves reflected from their surfaces (The American HeritageŽ). Radar based technology has touched our personal lives in the way of weather radar, air traffic control systems, speed guns, microwaves, and x-rays just to name a few. There are many interesting aspects of radar like how it started, how it works, and what we use it for. ... However, Hertz is not credited with the discovery of the radar principle because he made no practical application of his observation. The first demonstration of radar was in 1903 by German scientists using infant technology to detect the movements of ships at sea.
