Sorry, I haven't finished the essay yet. Here I just copy some paragraphs from the internet.Metaphor Analysis Darkness: In Heart of Darkness , "darkness" takes on at least two distinct meanings. Conrad employs darkness as both the traditional symbol of evil, hatred, and fear, and as a symbol of wild, elemental power. All of the white characters enter Africa thinking the darkness of the jungle must be tamed and that its savage, dark natives must be civilized. Kurtz and Marlow find, however, a dark heart of Africa imbued with elemental, primeval power that forces them to look at the darkness (hate, fear, and evil) within themselves. The Congo River: Conrad describes the Congo River as a snake winding its way into the heart of Africa. Traditionally, snakes symbolize deceit and cunning.
