Throughout time man has been curious to earth’s composition, shape and size. Hundreds and thousands of years ago man was restricted to measure only objects, which could be experienced with their senses. ... A good example of this is Erastosthenes, ( error-toss-the-knees ), a Greek scholar who with the use of mathematics calculated the radius of the earth. Over the past few centuries, especially the past four decades man has really advanced with technical devices, such as satellites, which can project data and images of the earth, moon and other planets straight to scientists for analyse. ... Eratosthenes estimated the radius of the earth, by using Mathematics ( mainly parallel lines and angles ). ... 2’, the angle of the vertical object to the ground was 90’ and the assumption that the earth was round gave the 360’ ).
Eratosthenes could now measure the radius of the earth by making two assumptions
- that the earth is round
- that the sun’s rays are shining parallel. ...
In December 1972, the crew of Apollo 17 took this photograph of while their spacecraft was travelling between the Earth and the Moon. New visions of the earth and new methods of determining the earth surface were developing.
