Youth Suicide in Rural Australia
Government Funded Prevention Strategies
Youth suicide rates in Australia are proving more and more to be a great concern to the Commonwealth Department of Health. When compared to those of other countries, Australia’s rate of suicide in its youth demographic is amongst the highest in the world. When compared to other causes of death, suicide is still reasonably uncommon. It is, however, a leading cause of death in Australian youth, equalled by those caused by road accidents.
Statistics obtained by organisations such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Commonwealth department of Health indicate that suicide rates vary and differ between demographics of Australians, and that rates are dependent and influenced by various factors. ...
For example, the Australian Bureau of
Statistics has found that suicide rates are higher for men than women.
Suicide Deaths
Males vs. Females
Despite the media’s focus on the prevalence of suicide amongst Australia’s youth, the age group with the most common rate of suicide is those between the age of 25 and 34 (males in particular).
