Fahrenheit 451

Questions- 1. Characterize or describe Clarisse McClellan. Why does she have such an unsettling effect on Montag? Clarisse is a beautiful girl who is pretty much the opposite of the ideal personality to fit in the book’s corrupted society. She is thoughtful, kind, gentle, and loves nature. Montag, on the other hand, is as robotic and mindless as the rest of the society, and the two personalities are complete opposites. I think one thing is that she is completely willing to be his friend and very open with him, and that scares him, but also I think that she is stirring something up deep inside him that he is scared will come out. 2. Describe the ways in which Millie is a product of the culture in F451. What is her marriage to Montag like? Mildred is, as I described Montag before, a robot to the society. She constantly watches TV, and seems to be somewhat of a gaunt old vegetable, perhaps with personality, but without meaning. I think everyone in the book is raised like this in order to be accepted. Her relationship with Montag seems to continue purely out of habit. That is all they have known since they have been married. They are not necessarily unhappy, they just kind of “go through the motions.” 3. An antagonist is a character or force that comes in conflict with the protagonist or main character. Describe how Captain Beatty's character represents the authority in control of the society in F451. Captain Beatty represents the authority in control of the society because he is a fireman, and because he makes sure that there is an ignorantly blissful and book-free society. Also, he has been where all the society may think about going, or secretly has wished to go. He is extremely well read, and wants to convince everyone that there is nothing but nonsense in books. In this way, he controls everyone. 4. Faber is representative of the society that has been lost to the populace in the novel. Do you see him as cowardly or courageous over the course of the novel?
