Some conspiracy theorists believe that the Moon landings never took place. The theorists say that the Apollo Moon missions were concocted by NASA and/or the American government for the following reasons. President Kennedy famously declared in 1961, that the US would "land a man on the moon and return him safely to the Earth before the end of the decade", so by 1969 they may have felt that they were rapidly running out of time. The US had lost ground to the Russians in the so called Space Race, as they had been beaten to having the first man in space (Yuri Gagarin). A momentous event would raise the American public interest in NASA's space programme, which by 1969 was flagging. Below we list some of the main points the theorists use to back up their claim, followed by a short summary of the Apollo believers explanation.
