The definition of the term baroque is not clear, but it is thought to have been derived from either the Portuguese ‘barocco’ or the Spanish ‘barueco’ meaning an irregular shaped pearl. It could be said that the term does not accurately define the meaning of the style.
The roots of baroque art lay in Italy and especially Rome during the late sixteenth century. ... Artists began to develop skills in the naturalistic quality of their work through life drawing, to revive the monumental classicism of the High Renaissance. ... These combined qualities started the development in to the baroque style.
Baroque art has a sense of movement, energy and tension. The strong contrast of light and shadow used in baroque art enhances the dramatic effects of the paintings.
