Abraham Lincoln was instrumental in freeing slaves in the United States. From right at the beginning Lincoln was pressured by abolitionists and radical Republicans to issue an Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln did approve the proclamation but he postponed action until he had more support from the Americans. Lincoln said “I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. ... Lincoln then denied the social equality of the black and white races.
