Editing is a key methodology in movie making as it is considered a crucial element in
conveying the film’s message in a manner suitable for the silver screen. The recently
released film, The Sum of all Fears, utilized several different mainstream editing
techniques to build action, suspense, and dramatical situations to intrigue its audience.
One editing technique, which stands out in this film is the use of intercutting and its
ability to build emotion during such a dramatic scene.
The Sum of All Fears is a movie taken from the archives of novel writer Tom Clancy
who is also the Executive Producer of this action packed drama with espionage,
terrorism, military, and political overtones. This film takes us back to the early days in
the career of CIA agent Dr. ... retaliation is imminent as all fingers point in the direction of Russia as being
responsible for this terrorist act. ... The scene then switches back to the treaty signing where the shot has gone
from a master shot, which included audience members in the foreground as well as both
Presidents coming together to a table in the middle ground with a slightly off center
camera angle from the audience point of view, to an analytical shot. The analytical shot
includes a close up of the document and someone holding a pen and signing the treaty
papers. ... This film comes at a
time where the tragic events surrounding New York’s World Trade Center are still
lingering in the minds of a lot of people and has some terrorist overtones similar to that of
this recent event.
