The Disappointments in the Career of Poe Throughout his career, Edgar Allan Poe faced a series of disappointments. The young writer’s future may have seemed bright when his first volume of poems was published in 1827. However, to his disappointment, very few people bought it. Poe then went on to attend West Point in the summer of 1830. The following spring he was once again stricken with bad luck when he was expelled from the Academy. In 1835, Poe became a successful magazine editor in Richmond, Virginia. Unfortunately, the owner of the magazine objected to his editor’s bad habits and fired him two years later despite his talent.
