In the story, “The Dill Peddler” by Laithanh Ha, we are introduced to a Vietnamese mother and son living in America. ... One of her primary hobbies is to sell her dill. Even though she “grows more tired” as she bends over to pick the dill, “the release of newly broken branches pushes her along”. ... Mac cannot understand why his mother is selling dill. ... ” He thinks that Ba-Nam is selling her dill because she needs the money. ... Ba-Nam sells her dill because it comforts her in a strange and alien country. Selling dill makes her feel at peace, and it also lets her retain her own freedom. ... Even though Mac eventually takes a lawnmower and destroys Ba-Nam’s dill, she is still hopeful. ... Even though Mac thinks that this will stop his mother from peddling the dill, he is mistaken. ... The end of the story holds a hopeful tone, as Ba-Nam continues to sell her dill. However, the dill plant is a symbol of Ba-Nam herself.
