Woman, Ethos and Gaming Introduction: According to IDSA, current statistics show that while computer gaming used to be a male-dominated pastime, women now comprise 43% of PC gamers and 35% of console gamers. 53% of all female gamers are likely to play games online compared to 43% of male gamers. The problem I experienced with the gaming industry is the exclusion of the female voice in games, game magazines and gaming advertisement. I have high respect for female gamers who just don’t give a hoot for the exploiting of female bodies and the lack of attention female-hardcore gamers receives. Female bodies are everywhere in gaming but it is stereotyped as a no women’s zone. It is the grand narrative thought from Freud back to Plato, which, as Irigaray points out, consistently exclude women by denying them subjectivity, that is, an existence of their own, in language, thought and imagination. The idea is created that ladies aren’t allowed, except for when a female is an ogled object. However this is no new news and obviously the statistics states that women are present. I can go on stating these women exploiting claims take the latest Playstation2 edition and extract an example on every page to advocate these statements. However I am sick of complaining and criticizing, why on earth would I want to criticize a male’s magazine, when the real blame is on the female magazine industry. According to me the males have done their job, they saw the potential money and they are publishing magazines for men, so where are the women. Why aren’t the Cosmopolitan and the Elle advertising games? Why are there not even articles on women gamers? Where are the women’s gaming magazines? I read and listen to so many passionate women gamers online and at social gatherings and still we don’t make our own publishing of our passions. Even now our beauty magazines rejected the PR office of Primal to advertising space in their magazines. Primal was very consciously made for women (and men). I even had the privilege to meet Katy Lea one of the women that created Jen, the lead character of Primal. I wish women had more knowledge and courage to make their own companies rather than just fitting in with male corporations. Women don’t lack penises women lack entrepreneurial encouragement. Again this assignment is not going to look for evidence to blame women, because then I the creator of this assignment am only taking the passive position Sigmund Freud so generously prearranged women into. From this point on I will focus on an article for female gamers, therefore I would rather create a product than criticize someone else’s product and therefore side step judgment’s easy path. My goal is to carve spaces of women Eros in gaming rather than to reject other spaces. Starting an Article for Female Gamers: What would a female gamer want? One of the most popular things in magazines is a quiz, because true knowledge lies within. It will especially be attractive to gamers, because it is one of the highest levels of interactivity that a magazine can achieve. I took some inspiration of the Playstation2 Magazine and translated their “Who are you?”- Quiz into something that could be used by female gamers. Aiming on the Quiz I am suggesting a wake-up call for the gaming industry. Yup women gamers (on the pinnacle of that group is me) are saying:” Sorry lads, we are not as invisible as tampons and surely not as thin as the latest pads, so you won’t be able to ignore us!” This quiz is aimed at women gamers, who purchase Playstation2 magazines, although it is filled with bravado talk.
