Gary Black was a 14-year-old Australian country boy who at first accepted life and people as he found them. ... Through this story Gary Black begins to mature by taking things more seriously instead of a joke and also gains self-confidence instead of being a ‘gutless wonder.’ At first Gary thought that he would always want his father’s approval and that football would remain as a part of his life. ... By the end of this story he transforms into a new and better Gary Black and was much different and mature from the Gary Black in the beginning.
Gary made fun of everything and did not take important matters too seriously such as the grand final, thinking it was just an ordinary game. ... Gary said to Arks “Don’t worry we are going to win this one. ... ) This is just one of the few examples that shows how Gary changes into a whole different person by developing self-confidence.
The good friendship with Dumby Red has influenced Gary and changed him into a mature person. At first Gary did not really like Aborigines, accepted the racists jokes and did not notice the racists graffiti around the Port. However, when Gary met Dumby everything just turned around. Gary disliked Dumby in the beginning because of jealousy and said to his friends, ‘I hate his guts,’ and spat on to the ground to prove it. ... ) As Gary knew Dumby more he began to like him as a person. ... Gary realized that it was wrong to discriminate against different races. For instance, when Big Mac told the crude and racist joke about the Aboriginal and the Priest, everybody burst out laughing except Gary.
