During the early part of the 20th century, many African American’s began migrating to the North in search of equal opportunity for themselves and their children. Those who lived in the South knew firsthand about the blatant prejudices that existed between white and black people. One example of this type of prejudice was segregation. Black children were not allowed to attend the same school as white children. The two races were not allowed to intermingle. Consequently, the ones treated with less regard were black people. On the other hand, a black person who lived in the North would not experience this type of segregation. As a result, many black people migrated to the North. Unfortunately, what they did not realize was that the black race would be discriminated against in the North as well. The story written by Langston Hughes titled “One Friday Morning” was a clear depiction that one could not escape discrimination, even if you moved to an area where different races appeared to live harmoniously together. This is the story of a teenage girl, named Nancy Lee. Nancy Lee’s parents decided to relocate from the South to the North in hopes that their daughter would have a better experience in the educational process, unlike how it was for them. Nancy Lee’s parents both earned a college education by attending Negro colleges in the South. “Nancy Lee’s father was a mail carrier, her mother a social worker in a city settlement house…And her mother had gotten a further degree in social work from a Northern University.” Consequently, the fact that Nancy Lee’s mother was able to further her education by attending a college located in the North was the determining factor in their relocation. Nancy Lee and her parents “lived in a modest Negro neighborhood” and “went to see the best plays.” In addition, her parents “had been saving to send Nancy Lee to art school, in case she were permitted to enter”. Nancy Lee was like any other teenager. This was her senior year at George Washington High School. Nancy Lee had many friends, both black and white.
