On April 26, 1937 at 4:30pm the German Air force, with help from Italy and fascist national party in Spain, unleashed tons of explosives on Guernica, a small city in Spain. ... The bombing of Guernica, a small defenseless city was criticized around the world. Pablo Picasso, a popular Spanish painter of that time was asked to produce a piece of art to decorate the Spanish Pavillion in the Paris world fair. Responding to the means of his painting, he created a large monochrome mural showing the horror of the bombing of Guernica which he titled “Guernica”.
