Buck Setting: There are two villages in this book; Anhwei is a small farming village that has a famine forcing many families to move south, including Wang Lung’s, but eventually he returns, and Kiangsu, a city south of Anhwei. It has a lot of food and a lot of rich people. Main Characters: Wang Lung-Main character who in the beginning, a poor farmer, becomes a wealthy landowner. O-Lan-Wang Lung’s wife, very strong woman, runs the house. Father Wang-Father of Wang Lung who chooses Wang Lung’s actions. Wang Lung’s Uncle-Bad uncle who causes trouble. Nun-En-Wang Lung’s eldest son. Nun-Wen-second oldest son. “Poor Fool”-eldest daughter of Wang Lung, retarded child. Pear Blossom-Loyal slave of Wang Lung who looks after “Poor Fool” after Wang’s passing. Plot Summary: The book begins with O-Lan and Wang Lung getting married without any previous introduction.
