Greed

Why is greed an essential in today's world? Perspective is everything, would you not agree? In my time, I have seen people get upset because they could not afford a two-hundred dollar article of clothing, typically having little and often less value than a similar article of a significantly lower and saner price. I have witnessed people paying tens of thousands of dollars more for automobiles that look nicer, but get a person nowhere speedier or more effectively than one of a greatly lower cost. Perhaps the most incredulous example is the person who invests their money over a lifetime for the sole sake of making more money. People open their bank accounts to these luxuries and frivolities, or save gratuitous amounts of money, just to improve their image or their status. This hording and dereliction of cash is a manifestation of insecurity; being unsatisfied with their current self and life, they believe that these extraneous items or surpluses of money will reaffirm them in their own eyes and the eyes of others. Ultimately, this leads to greed. On its own, money is a piece of metal, plastic or paper that is relatively worthless, yet because of the value that our society places in money, it is transformed into something that people work their entire lives for, endure misery for, betray their friends and family for, and even die for. It is a personal choice to live one's life for a bunch of dead leaders, but in terms of happiness it is an erroneous one. Money is not going fill the bucket of loneliness that our lives reverberate. It may bring us temporary pleasure in the form of goods or services, but one cannot go through life leapfrogging from one small pleasure to the next, because somewhere along the line the effect begins to diminish, and when all is done, who do you have to share these things with, and would the people who surround you really be there for you, or for your possessions and money?
