Warren Gamaliel Harding was born in Blooming Grove, Morrow County, Ohio, on November 2, 1865. Harding took an interest in journalism at an early age because his father was a part owner of their town newspaper, which his mother also wrote for. He attended Ohio Central College and was briefly a teacher, a lawyer, and an insurance salesman. Harding encouraged his father to buy the Marion Star, and later after the 1884 election declared the paper essentially republican. In 1891, Harding married Florence Kling DeWolfe. Harding began his political career with his election to the Ohio Senate in 1900 and gradually went up in ranks within the proceeding 20 years. He became a candidate for the republican nomination for presidency in 1920.
