The time from sunset on Halloween to sunset on All Saint's Day correspond to the ancient Celtic Druid New Year's Day called Samhain, which was also the beginning of the Celtic winter It was also a time to honor the ancestors of one's family and also a time when the souls of the dead returned from their graves. The Roman Catholic Church in the 6'th century chose to replace Samhain with All Saint's Day. The idea was to coax the people into honoring the Christian saints at this time, rather than their own ancestors. After it became fully apparent that this failed to do the trick, the Church declared that, on each year, November 2 was to be All Soul's Day.
