The full moon festival of Holika announces the commencement of the spring season. According to the stories in the Puranas and other local legends, this day is important for three reasons. The first reason was when Siva opened his third eye and turned Kamadeva, the god of love, into ashes. Second, Holika tried to kill Prahlad by taking him on her lap and sitting on a pyre of wood which was set on fire. Holika was burnt but Prahlad remained untouched. Thirdly, it was on this day that Dhundhi was made to run for her life.
