In many works of literature, the protagonist usually prevails against evil. The forces of evil can be real or fake, but the protagonist must overcome the evil, even if the evil is imaginary. The battle between good and evil is portrayed in the novel Jasmine, by Bharati Mukherjee, and in several selections from the World Masterpieces on Indian literature. In Jasmine, she is faced with a battle in the beginning of the novel, and she has to fight against the fact that whomever she is married to, will die and she will become a widow.
