Lincoln Paper Pre-civil: Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery, however, decided that in order to do so he would only stop expansion of slavery in new territories and allow the south to keep the slaves they currently have. "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interefere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists, I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." (p. 109)---the First Inaurgural Address -----Lincoln makes his tatic on abolish slavery clear from the start of his presidency. He wanted to avoid secession in all possible circumstances(he believed secession was not possible---p. 111). He wanted to equally represent the North and the South, thus both point of views. " In one word, I never have been, am not now, and probably never shall be, in a mood of harassing the people, either North or South." (p.98) -------Lincoln does not, however, want to expand slavery in any way possible. this is shown through the speech he gave on the Nebraska-Kansas Act-"I think, and shall try to show, that it is wrong;wrong in its direct effect, letting slavery into Kansas and Nebraska --and wrong in its prospective principle, allowing it to spread to every other part of the wide world, where men can be found inclined to take it." (p.45) ------In a letter to Senator Trumbull Lincoln writes, "Let there be no compromise on the question of extending slavery." (p.97) Stopping expansion of slavery---- Although Lincoln did not take any steps such as revoking the Nebraska-Kansas Act, he made it quite clear that he would not allow anymore expansion of slavery, which frightened the South. Thus, right after Lincoln won the presendential election of ________, the south started seceeding beginning with South Carolina, Mississipi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.
