Understanding the canonization of the Old Testament is understanding the way or process that the writings were compiled into a complete collection which is what we see and read from today. The English word “canon” originally comes from the Greek word “kanon” which means “a rule” (Anderson). In this context however, the word “canonization” is simply used to determine which books were chosen to be in the Old Testament and the process that were used to choose them. The thirty-nine books of the Old Testament are traditionally accepted by Jews as inspired by God (Buttrick 840). The first section of the Old Testament to be canonized is the Torah.
