Rabbit Proof Fence is a film the terrible history of Australia and the terrible aspect of Australian history is still unresolved and it is still a divisive issue in Australia because it continues to resonate in our society today. Can you imagine being kidnapped from your family as a baby, being sent to the other side of the country, brought up in a culture other than your own, being told that your parents are dead, and being treated like a slave? It sounds like a cruel and ludicrous fate, but this is exactly what has happened, until recently, to native Australians who are now widely known as 'The Stolen Generation'. Many Indigenous Australian children were taken from their families because they were living in appalling conditions like Molly’s family. For example, the white Australians took Molly, Gracie and Daisy from their family because they thought they could look after the children better. Molly, Gracie and Daisy were not even allowed to say goodbye to their parents. However, the Indigenous Australian children like Molly, Daisy and Gracie were not being helped anymore than their own families. The Indigenous Australian children were often imprisoned in the institutions without enough food, without enough clothes, without enough love. Physical and sexual abuse was also common in the institutions. Tragically, the indigenous Australians children including Molly were forced to forget their one but unique culture and they were forced to learn white Australian culture. Including their language, beliefs, and religion. Molly would gaze from her cabin disgusted, as the Indigenous Australian children were physically and sexually abused time after time.
