In 1939, Hitler established an epoch of corruption and prejudice as he infected the world with evil and dismay. In South Africa, a similar kind of hatred was brewing, only towards the English on account of a new policy of partition. This was Apartheid, the legal policy of racial segregation proposed by the governing white minority. The story, “The Power of One”, by Bryce Courtenay takes place during this era, which in itself, sets the stage for the brilliantly written novel of a young boy’s road to survival. Peekay is the protagonist in the book, which primarily focuses on his obscene childhood and how he overcomes terrible adversities to evolve into an intelligent young man. The book opens when Peekay is sent to a boarding house because his mother could not take care of him. Here, it is brought to his attention that he is different than all the other boys, not only because he was English, but because he was the “enemy”. Amongst the herd of angry Afrikaner children, there was one who led them, one who stood taller and stronger than all the rest. They called him “The Judge”.
