Scotland is known to be the one of the worst countries in the world for Heart Disease and it is predicted that 50,000 of the next generation of children will die in Scotland prematurely due to this. It is widely recognised that health is directly related to diet yet, in Scotland, there are a significant number of children who are deprived of a healthy, balanced diet. It is now recognised that much of the problem lies with the provision of school meals. There is increasing evidence that poor eating habits in school children not only contribute to potentially fatal heart disease but they can also cause poor concentration and behaviour in class. Currently schools provide poor quality food, which does not meet the Government's guidelines for children’s nutrition. Much of the food on offer in Scottish schools today is very high in fat, high in salt and high in sugar – the three key ingredients which contribute to heart disease. Many schools employ outside agencies to prepare and serve the food under contract. These providers are businesses in their own right and, without proper regulation, their focus can be on profit making rather than the provision of healthy options and a balanced diet. To complicate matters, many primary schools have a budget for ingredients of a mere 35 pence per pupil ¹. This leaves little option for the caterer but to provide the cheapest food available, which is generally unhealthy, over-processed food.
