H.G Wells wrote the War Of The Worlds in 1898. Wells was born in 1866 and was a scientist and teacher before he begun to write books. Although the novel was written over 106 years ago, it is set in the future (the twentieth century). When Wells wrote the book, Queen Victoria was still on the throne and the first and second world wars were yet to happen. The novel is a science fiction novel, which I think means fictional predictions of the future. In chapter one of the novel, Martians are watching the plant closely. People have noticed strange things on mars, which they think, are volcanoes, but in actual fact, what they are seeing is explosions going off once every 24 hours. Also in chapter one there are missiles sent from mars, heading to earth. The missiles are going at a speed of forty million miles per hour.
