Oedipus tells Thebes that the death of their king Laios is the reason for the current plague killing many of its citizens. ... Oedipus’ steady conceit brings about the turning point when Iocasta tells him that her husband Laios died at a place where three roads met. This triggers a memory in Oedipus’ mind where, on his way to Thebes he encountered a band of men, which angered him so he killed all of them, not knowing his father, King Laios, was among them.
