One of the most powerful tools of the senate, impeachment, allows for the removal of high ranking officials to be questioned on acts of judgment through a process of trials. Cornell Law Institutelays outs the guidelines for a formal process of impeachment:
These proceedings begin with informal charges brought against the official with the approval of the house Judiciary Committee. From this point, the judiciary committee conducts an inquiry, which will form theplatform of these hearings known as articles of impeachment. ... Once articles of impeachment have been approved, the official becomes subject to trial in the senate. ... impeachment for, and on conviction of, treason, bribery, or other higher crimes or misdemeanors.
