His wife and young son are slaughtered by a group of highway savages after the world is reduced to chaos. He has nothing left but his dog and his car. He is a “shell of a man”. These sentences describe the main character, Max, in the movie, The Road Warrior. After the world suffers much destruction, the former patrolman, Max, experiences a heart breaking tragedy and he is reduced to a wanderer and a scavenger. In this demolished desert land in the Australian outback, gas has become as valuable as gold. The journey begins with Max traveling down the highway in search of the priceless fuel. Along the way he meets the infamous Marauders. The Marauders are a gang of death dealing merciless savages. They act without reason, killing first and looting second. Even the loss of their own people is insignificant to them. After fighting them off, with his clever wit and extensive ability to maneuver his vehicle in undesirable situations, he is able to acquire a small amount of gas from a nearly demolished rig. He then moves on where he meets the Gyro Captain who takes him to the site of an oil pump. A group labeled as the Defenders guards the pump. The Defenders trust no one, but they only attack those who strike first. They appear to be people of reason but have been burned too often to allow anyone to enter their ground. They are a closely-knit family and the loss of there comrades is catastrophic. As Max scopes out the area he witnesses the murder of two Defenders by the Marauders. There are too many of them to fight so Max can only watch as the Marauders take away their victims innocence and lives. After the Marauders move on Max goes to the remaining victim, Nathan, who is holding on to life by a thread. Max makes a deal to bring Nathan to his people in exchange for fuel. Once Max arrives at the gate of the Defenders he is treated as a criminal.
