The significance of the river to the characters in the story is very personal. The river was a home away from home for mostly, Huck and Jim. They traveled in and out of every town, lying and convincing stories with every new person they met. Every time they got into trouble, they returned back to the river to travel and experience new adventures. To them, the river was like their mother, a home or guardian. It was there to comfort, guide or grieve with. Throughout the whole story Huck and Jim have a dream to travel to Cairo. While on their way to their utopia, the two encounter many tribulations, such as getting caught by many people, being separated from each other and almost killed every time. The Mississippi River was one of their closest homes away from home.
