“Quilts”
In the short story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. ... Dee wants the quilts that were hand made by her grandma, but the quilts were promised to Maggie the youngest daughter. Dee continues to beg for the quilts, showing no appreciation and respect for her mother and sister. Her mother decides to give the quilts to Maggie as there were promised.
Mama is thinking how when Dee first went off to college she offered Dee the quilts, but she did not want the quilts, because she thought they were old fashioned and out of style. ... Dee is demanding the quilts be given to her, that were made by her grandma and aunt, she sees the quilts only as a fashion statement. ... Mama knows what it is to work hard, it is hard work to make quilts by hand, and she knows that Maggie would take care of the quilts and cherished them better than Dee would. ... Even though Dee’s mama is uneducated, she in not ignorant, mama knows that Dee only wants the quilts for her own motivation. ...
Even though Mama has not said that Dee could have the quilts, Dee has already claimed the quilts.
